Location description : San Pedro del Pinatar is a small town and municipality in the autonomous community and province of Murcia, southeastern Spain. The municipality is situated at the northern end of Murcia's Mediterranean coastline, the Costa Cálida, and borders with the province of Alicante. It has an area of almost 22 km², and a population (2008) of over 23,738. San Pedro del Pinatar (Saint Peter of the Pinewoods) is about 49 km from the provincial capital, Murcia. The municipality is situated between the Mediterranean Sea coast and the Mar Menor ("Little Sea"), a coastal saltwater lagoon which is the largest in Europe. The Mar Menor coast belongs to other three municipalities: San Javier, Los Alcázares and Cartagena. The latter is not by the Mar Menor itself, but in the Mediterranean. San Pedro del Pinatar occupies a small peninsula with 14 km of coastline between the two seas. The terrain is a mostly low-lying littoral depression, with an average elevation of only 13 m above mean sea level. Entertainment is a must in this town. Thankfully this town still retains the Spanish feeling and there are not too many English bars yet to spoil this area. That said, things have changed a lot in the last 5 years and from a village where English was hardly heard its common to hear the spoken English on a daily basis. Predominatly San Pedro del Pinatar remains a very popular Spanish holiday destination and the population swells during the summer months as the Madrianos (and other Spanish) with second homes descend on the area. Naturally the council caters for this in style and lots of entertainment is provided gratis. In July and August free aerobics and other similar classes are available just off causeway by the start of Villanitos beach. The classes usually kicks off at around 9.30am. Said classes will have large banners on the beach advertising times and content; alternatively you can pick up a leaflet at the tourist office. Naturally being by the sea there are many different watersports on offer including pedalos, jet ski hire, boat trips (but beware some of these activities are seasonal). You can take a "Segway" tour down the causeway......the tour takes around 2 hours and is great fun for couples or the whole family. During the summer season you will find a singer crooning in Spanish in the square just behind La Molina....many locals swirl round dancings the night away. Its lovely to watch and great fun to join in......In between dances you can enjoy a drink. For those less energetic, there is a restaurant just beind where the dancing takes place and you can enjoy a meal whilst watching others dancing. The village of San Pedro del Pinatar has many great restaurants, a casino and bars where you can enjoy mixed cuisine or simply chill out with a coffee, cake or old drink. During the summer season don't be surprised to find entertainment in the form of a local singer, guitar player or dancers thrown in...;-)) There are some brit bars about 10 - 15 walk from of the main village of San Pedro del Pinatar toward Thalassia hotel (they typically provide brit food). If you prefer to be by the seafont, Spanglish is a good option.
